Hi, John the Dolphin Expert here, and I am excited to share one of the newest activities we are offering in the Upper Keys — the Dolphin Encounter Shallow & Deep Water Program in Key Largo.
This is a special program because it takes place at one of the original swim with dolphins facilities in the Florida Keys. For many years, guests have traveled to Key Largo to meet dolphins up close, and this program gives families, couples, kids, and dolphin lovers a flexible way to enjoy a real dolphin interaction without having to do a full dolphin swim with rides.

Swimming with Dolphins Key Largo: A Flexible Dolphin Experience
The Dolphin Encounter in Key Largo is a wonderful choice for guests who want to be in the water with dolphins but may not be ready for the full dolphin swim program. All participants ages 3 and older will enjoy a shallow-water dolphin interaction from a submerged platform.
This means younger children, non-swimmers, and guests who feel more comfortable staying in shallow water can still touch, pet, hug, kiss, and play with the dolphins in a safe and guided setting.
Some guests ages 5 and older may also have the opportunity to step off the shallow-water platform and go into deeper water for additional dolphin interaction. This deep-water portion does not include rides, but it does allow you to continue interacting with the dolphins in a more open-water setting.
Important Note: This Program Does Not Include Dolphin Rides
I always like to be honest with my guests. This Dolphin Encounter program is not the same as the Dolphin Swim. There are no dorsal fin rides, foot pushes, or belly rides in this activity.
If your dream is to be pushed through the water by a dolphin or hold onto a dolphin’s fins for a ride, then you will want to book the Dolphin Swim program instead.
But if your goal is to meet dolphins, touch them, interact with them, take beautiful photos, and enjoy a more relaxed dolphin experience, then this Key Largo Dolphin Encounter is a great choice.
What Makes the Key Largo Dolphin Encounter Different?
One of the most unique things about this Key Largo program is that it is not strictly based on a timer.
At many dolphin facilities, the in-water dolphin program is usually about 30 minutes. That is the normal setup at many locations, and those programs are based more on time.
Here in Key Largo, the program is different. The focus is on completing a set number of dolphin behaviors in the proper way, at a comfortable pace for both the guests and the dolphins.
That means your in-water time can vary. Some sessions may be around 20 minutes. Other sessions may last longer, sometimes closer to an hour. It really depends on the dolphins, the guests, and how the session is flowing that day.
The Dolphins Are Never Forced
This is something I really appreciate about Dolphin Life in Key Largo. The dolphins are never forced to complete a behavior. The staff works with the dolphins based on their mood, comfort, and willingness to participate.
As John the Dolphin Expert, I think this makes the program more exciting and more meaningful. Every session is a little different. You are not just being moved through a rushed checklist. You are taking part in a dolphin interaction that depends on the relationship between the trainers, the dolphins, and the guests.
That is what makes this experience feel more natural.
What Dolphin Behaviors Are Included?
During the Dolphin Encounter, guests may enjoy a variety of dolphin behaviors and interactions. Every session can be different, but the program may include handshaking, hugging, touching, petting, kissing, and playing with dolphins.
Shallow-Water Dolphin Fun
Guests can enjoy handshakes, hugs, kisses, touching, petting, and playful moments with the dolphins. This is perfect for children, families, and guests who want a close-up experience without having to swim in deep water.
Optional Deep-Water Interaction
For some guests ages 5 and older, there may be an opportunity to move from the shallow-water dock into deeper water. In this part of the program, you continue to pet, play, and interact with the dolphins.
Remember, this deep-water part is not a ride program. It is still an encounter, but it gives more confident guests a chance to experience the dolphins away from the shallow platform.
Safe, Comfortable, and Family Friendly
Life vests are provided for participants, which is very helpful for younger children, nervous swimmers, and guests who are not strong swimmers.
The shallow-water portion takes place on a sunken platform. When you step off that platform, you are in deeper water, so the life vest helps you feel safe and relaxed while enjoying the dolphins.
The program is designed for different ages, swimming levels, and comfort levels. That is one of the biggest reasons I like recommending this activity to families. One child may want to stay on the platform, while an older child or adult may be comfortable going into deeper water.
A Natural Ocean Water Facility in Key Largo
This Key Largo dolphin facility is a little different from many other dolphin locations Dolphin World represents. The program takes place in a fenced natural ocean-water area connected to a saltwater canal in Key Largo.
The water here is not crystal clear like a swimming pool. It is natural ocean water, so it can look a little darker. But do not let that worry you. The experience is still wonderful.
The dolphin area is fenced, so large outside fish cannot come into the dolphin area. That means you do not have to worry about sharks or big fish swimming around you during the program.
The facility also has showers, bathrooms, and changing rooms, so you can get cleaned up after your dolphin interaction.
Digital Photos Are Included
One of the best values of this program is that professional digital photos are included for each participant.
At many dolphin facilities, photos can cost $100 or more after the program. Here, you do not have to worry about asking someone in your group to take pictures or missing the best moments. A professional photographer captures your dolphin experience, and your digital photos are included.
That is a big savings and a big bonus for families.
Plan About 1.5 to 2 Hours at Dolphin Life
Even though the in-water dolphin time may vary, guests should plan for about 1.5 to 2 hours total at Dolphin Life.
Your visit may include check-in, changing time, an educational briefing, safety instructions, your dolphin program, time to look at photos, a behind-the-scenes tour, and free time to explore the facility.
This is not an all-day park like some other dolphin locations in the Florida Keys, but it is a very personal and enjoyable dolphin experience.
Swim with Dolphins Near Miami and Ft Lauderdale
If you are staying in Miami, Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, or anywhere in South Florida, Key Largo is now the closest area for a dolphin program.
Since the Miami Seaquarium has closed, there are no longer dolphin facilities in South Florida. That makes Key Largo the best day-trip option for guests who want to swim with dolphins near Miami or swim with dolphins near Ft Lauderdale.
The drive into the Florida Keys is part of the adventure. Once you cross into Key Largo, you feel like you are leaving the city behind and entering island time.
Make a Day of It in Key Largo
Key Largo is the first island in the Florida Keys and has a long history as a diving, snorkeling, boating, and marine-life destination. It is known for its reefs, ocean adventures, and relaxed island atmosphere.
If you want to stay overnight, I recommend looking at Marina Del Mar in Key Largo. It is a convenient hotel option close to the water, restaurants, marinas, and Upper Keys attractions.
For food, you cannot go wrong with Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen. It is one of those classic Key Largo stops that visitors love. After your dolphin encounter, a Keys-style lunch or dinner at Mrs. Mac’s makes the day feel complete.
