Swimming with Dolphins and Exploring Rain Barrel Village in Islamorada

Dolphin Encounters and Artistic Treasures at Rain Barrel Village in Islamorada

Nestled along the scenic Overseas Highway in the heart of the Florida Keys lies a roadside gem unlike any other. Rain Barrel Village in Islamorada has been attracting curious travelers, art lovers, and island explorers for decades. From its colorful artisan shops and lush tropical gardens to the giant lobster sculpture that greets every visitor, Rain Barrel Village is a place of discovery and delight. But just minutes away, another unforgettable experience awaits—swimming with dolphins in the clear blue waters of Islamorada. Together, these two destinations create a day of creativity, connection, and coastal magic in the Florida Keys.

The History of Rain Barrel Village

Rain Barrel Village has been a beloved roadside stop in the Florida Keys since the 1970s. Originally opened as a small artist collective, it began with a handful of local craftsmen who wanted a space to showcase their handmade goods. Over the years, it grew into a full-fledged artist enclave where painters, sculptors, jewelers, and crafters could display their work and connect with visitors from around the world.

Its laid-back, welcoming atmosphere reflects the spirit of the Keys—colorful, quirky, and full of creativity. Each building within the village was designed with charm and character in mind, and many of the original artist studios still operate today. With winding walkways, tropical foliage, and hidden corners full of surprises, the village feels more like an outdoor gallery than a shopping center.

The location, at mile marker 86.7 in Islamorada, makes it an easy stop for anyone driving through the Upper Keys. Whether you’re looking for a break from the road or an afternoon of artistic discovery, Rain Barrel Village is one of the most unique and photogenic destinations in the Keys.

Shops and Studios at Rain Barrel Village

Wandering through Rain Barrel Village is like stepping into a tropical dreamscape. The shops are filled with a wide array of handcrafted treasures that reflect the local island culture and the individuality of the artists. From hand-blown glass and island-inspired paintings to driftwood sculptures and seashell jewelry, the variety of goods available is astounding.

Each studio has its own personality. One shop might focus on bright, hand-painted furniture, while the next features delicate sea glass necklaces. There are photographers showcasing breathtaking aerial shots of the Keys, and potters crafting beautiful ceramics with coral and ocean motifs. There are tropical clothing boutiques with breezy resort wear and whimsical home décor shops filled with nautical charm.

For visitors who enjoy bringing home more than just memories, Rain Barrel Village offers a chance to meet the makers, learn the stories behind the items, and support the local creative community. And for those who love browsing for hours, the village offers plenty of shade, benches, and even a small café to keep you refreshed as you explore.

The Famous Giant Lobster: A Keys Landmark

No visit to Rain Barrel Village is complete without meeting “Betsy,” the enormous fiberglass lobster that guards the entrance to the village. Standing 30 feet tall and stretching over 40 feet long, this larger-than-life crustacean is one of the most photographed roadside attractions in the Florida Keys.

Betsy was created by sculptor Richard Blaze and originally built as a promotional display for a marine-themed exhibit. Eventually, the sculpture found its permanent home in front of Rain Barrel Village, where it has become a symbol of Keys creativity and an irresistible selfie spot for tourists. Kids marvel at its size, adults pose with it for vacation photos, and everyone passing by slows down to take a closer look.

While Betsy may look like a fun novelty, she also serves as a tribute to the importance of lobster to the local economy and cuisine of the Florida Keys. Lobster fishing has long been a staple of life in the islands, and Betsy reminds visitors of the region’s deep ties to the sea.

Holiday Shopping and Christmas Gifts at Rain Barrel Village

While Islamorada is known for its sun and sand, Rain Barrel Village transforms into a festive destination during the holiday season. The shops are adorned with coastal holiday décor, and many of the artists create special seasonal items that make perfect gifts.

Visitors will find Christmas ornaments made from seashells, hand-painted holiday cards, tropical-themed home décor, and jewelry collections that sparkle with holiday cheer. There’s something truly special about giving a one-of-a-kind gift crafted by a Florida Keys artist—whether it’s a ceramic pelican wearing a Santa hat or a starfish wreath accented with local coral.

For those shopping for loved ones back home, the village offers unique options that can’t be found in big-box stores. These thoughtful gifts tell a story and carry the warmth of the Keys spirit. Whether you’re looking for stocking stuffers or standout statement pieces, Rain Barrel Village is a hidden holiday treasure trove.

Dolphin-Inspired Gifts and Souvenirs

In addition to seasonal items, Rain Barrel Village is an excellent place to find dolphin-themed gifts year-round. Several of the shops carry art and jewelry inspired by marine life, especially dolphins, which are beloved symbols of the Keys.

You’ll find dolphin sculptures carved from driftwood or stone, paintings of dolphins leaping through waves, and silver pendants shaped like dolphins mid-dive. There are also children’s books, plush toys, and hand-painted dolphin ornaments—making it easy to bring a piece of your dolphin experience home with you.

These dolphin items are more than just souvenirs. They capture the feeling of wonder and joy that comes from seeing dolphins up close, whether on a wild encounter or during a structured swim. They serve as lasting reminders of a magical moment shared with these intelligent and playful animals.

Swimming with Dolphins in Islamorada

Just a short drive from Rain Barrel Village, you’ll find one of the most exciting marine experiences available in the Florida Keys: swimming with dolphins in Islamorada. This activity isn’t just for kids—it’s a meaningful and unforgettable adventure for people of all ages.

The dolphin swim program in the Florida Keys typically begins with a short educational session, where trainers explain dolphin behavior, anatomy, and how to interact respectfully with the animals. Afterward, guests enter the water and get up close with the dolphins in a natural lagoon.

During the swim, you’ll have the chance to do more than just watch. You’ll touch, play, and communicate with the dolphins using hand signals. Some programs include a belly ride, where you hold onto the dolphin as it glides you across the water. Others offer a dorsal tow or even a foot push, depending on your comfort level and swimming ability.

Swimming with dolphins is often described as an emotional experience. Their intelligence, friendliness, and gentle demeanor make it feel like a true connection between species. Many visitors leave the encounter feeling a deep sense of awe and joy, and for some, it becomes the highlight of their trip to the Keys.

The Dolphin Encounter: A Shallow Water Option

If you prefer a gentler, more accessible experience, the Dolphin Encounter program offers an alternative to the full swim. Designed for children, seniors, and anyone who prefers to stay in shallow water, the encounter allows participants to meet the dolphins while standing or sitting in waist-deep water.

In this setting, guests can still interact with the dolphins—touching them, feeding them, and watching them perform natural behaviors on cue. Trainers share information about the dolphins’ personalities, health, and care, making it a great learning experience as well as an entertaining one.

This encounter is perfect for families traveling with younger children or for anyone who may not feel confident in deeper water. It’s also a wonderful way to observe the dolphins’ intelligence up close without needing to be a strong swimmer.

Up Close with Sharks: The Shark Encounter Experience

For those who crave something a little more daring, the Shark Encounter offers a thrilling experience with one of the ocean’s most misunderstood creatures. This program allows you to safely interact with nurse sharks in a controlled environment under the guidance of trained professionals.

Nurse sharks are calm, bottom-dwelling species known for their docile nature. During the encounter, you’ll have the opportunity to touch and even feed them while learning about their behaviors and role in the marine ecosystem.

Many people are surprised at how serene and graceful the sharks are in person. Far from being fearsome, they are gentle, slow-moving, and fascinating to observe. The Shark Encounter is an excellent way to overcome common misconceptions and gain a deeper appreciation for these important ocean inhabitants.

The Sea Lion Swim: Laughter and Playfulness in the Water

Another unforgettable animal encounter offered near Islamorada is the Sea Lion Swim. These charismatic marine mammals are known for their playful antics, loud barks, and expressive faces. During the swim, you’ll have the opportunity to interact with sea lions in both shallow and deeper water settings.

Participants can give the sea lions hugs, kisses, and hand signals while watching them perform tricks and interact with trainers. The experience is lighthearted and fun, often filled with laughter and surprise. Sea lions are social creatures, and their energy is contagious.

Like the dolphin programs, the Sea Lion Swim includes an educational component that helps visitors understand more about marine mammal training, biology, and conservation. It’s an ideal activity for families and animal lovers who want a more interactive marine experience beyond the typical aquarium setting.

A Perfect Keys Day: Art, Nature, and Marine Life

Combining a trip to Rain Barrel Village with a dolphin swim or marine animal encounter creates the perfect day in Islamorada. Start your morning strolling through artist studios, browsing local treasures, and snapping a photo with Betsy the Lobster. Grab a coffee from the village café and pick up a dolphin-themed ornament or handmade Christmas gift for someone back home.

After lunch, head to the marine park or dolphin facility for your scheduled dolphin swim, encounter, or animal experience. Whether you’re in the water with dolphins, shaking flippers with a sea lion, or feeding a nurse shark, the connection you’ll feel with these animals is unforgettable.

And after a day of creativity and connection, you’ll leave Islamorada with more than just souvenirs—you’ll take with you memories that reflect the vibrant, colorful, and deeply natural spirit of the Florida Keys.

Islamorada’s Artistic and Aquatic Treasures

From the handmade art of Rain Barrel Village to the graceful movements of dolphins in a coastal lagoon, Islamorada offers a unique blend of human creativity and marine wonder. Visiting this part of the Keys means opening your heart to experiences you won’t find anywhere else—like the chance to swim with dolphins, shop for one-of-a-kind gifts, or stand beneath a 30-foot lobster and smile for a photo.

Whether you’re browsing for Christmas presents or diving into a dolphin swim, the connection between people and the sea is at the heart of what makes this destination so special. In Islamorada, art and ocean come together in a way that refreshes the soul and inspires lasting memories.

If you’re planning a trip to the Keys, make sure to stop at Rain Barrel Village and book a marine encounter nearby. You’ll walk away with sand in your shoes, a smile on your face, and maybe a dolphin trinket or two in your bag—reminders of a place where tropical magic is always just around the bend.

From the moment we arrived, the staff greeted us with such warmth and genuine friendliness, immediately making us feel welcome and eager to explore. Their helpfulness was evident throughout the park, and we greatly appreciated their assistance. We also noted how remarkably clean and well-maintained the entire facility was, which certainly contributed to a very pleasant atmosphere. The layout of the park and the thoughtful staggering of the show times were particularly impressive. This allowed us to enjoy all the presentations at a relaxed pace, without ever feeling rushed. As someone who has recently undergone two knee replacements, I was pleasantly surprised and very grateful for how accessible and manageable the park was to navigate. It was not at all strenuous, which allowed me to fully immerse myself in the experience without any discomfort. One of the absolute highlights of our day was the "Swim with the Dolphins" experience in the deeper water. The staff overseeing this program were incredibly knowledgeable, professional, and continued to be just as friendly and accommodating as everyone else we encountered. Again, I found this activity to be perfectly manageable despite my recent surgeries, which speaks volumes about its thoughtful execution. Beyond the fantastic guest experience, what truly resonated with us was the palpable kindness and care shown towards all the animals. It is evident that the well-being of your residents is a top priority. Learning about your commitment to rescue and rehabilitation for animals that cannot care for themselves further solidified our appreciation for Theater of the Sea's mission. Thank you once again for providing such an unforgettable and enjoyable day. We certainly look forward to sharing our positive experience online with friends and on review websites, and we sincerely hope to have the opportunity to visit you again very soon

I visited Dolphin World last week with my husband. We had an amazing time. The interaction and swimming with the dolphins was just so mesmerizing. I did not think twice, no hesitation at all. The dolphin show was out of this world. The trainers do an amazing job. I'm my opinion the show surpassed Sea World. I came home and told my girlfriend all about and she wants to experience this also. I told her I do it again in a heartbeat. Thank you so much for an amazing experience. Celeste Ferrell Virginia

I chose the Royal package and it was absolutely GREAT! I had a blast with the dolphins and trainers. The people who work there truly love these dolphins. I read a couple of reviews before I booked because I wanted to make sure it would be worth it, it is. I had seen where someone had mentioned the time they got to spend with the dolphins, I can only assume they chose a different package than I chose because, we had plenty of time with them and each person in the group got a chance with them. The only issue I had was the gift shop. I wanted to get a sticker with the dolphins that I got to swim with, but unfortunately they are the popular dolphins and no stickers were available. If anyone on staff sees this, I'd pay for these stickers when they come in if it would be possible to send them to me (I can provide the dates I was there if that would help). 😊 Overall a great experience. I would recommend this to anyone; Adults & Kids (age appropriate of course). Bucket List: ✅
